Boreal vs a plain 60/40 mix of stocks and bonds
A 60/40 mix, 60% stocks and 40% bonds, is the plain yardstick for a middle level of risk. Here it is 60% Canadian stocks (XIC) and 40% Canadian bonds (XBB), set back to 60/40 at the close of each year. Boreal is the middle of our five Canadian portfolios: five funds built to swing about 10% in a typical year.

Where these figures come from
The portfolios' results before November 3, 2026 come from a walk-forward test: each December their five funds were chosen from earlier prices only, then held for the next year. The 2026 portfolios were built on November 3, 2026 from prices up to December 31, 2025, and from then on they are recorded as they happen.
The 60/40 mix is built from the two funds' own records: bought at 60% Canadian stocks (XIC) and 40% Canadian bonds (XBB), dividends reinvested, and set back to 60/40 at the close of each year, paying the same 0.10% of every amount traded as the portfolios.
